Project Monitoring 6

This week I finished my magazine in it's entirety, this involved finishing all of the DPS', the front cover and the contents page. I had finished the front cover in the previous week so I only had to do the rest of the pages, I had created the backgrounds for the Capture article and the 'rock star article' so I only needed to add the text to it, I had created the background for the 'album' article but I decided to change it because I didn't like the background when I put all of the content in, because it is a very text heavy article I decided to use a plain background because any colours in the background would distract the eyes from the text. I decided to take a different approach to the layout of each album in the list, using a small thumbnail image and the title with the corresponding text below, this looked professional and was easier to read. I also created the title for the article, I made one for my initial mock up several months ago, I liked the way it looked, so I created a title that looked similar to the one I used originally. Another thing I had to create was the contents page, I looked to Kerrang Magazine for the inspiration for the contents page, I made a collage of all of the features in the top and had all of the other articles that would be in the magazine on the bottom half of the page.

Overall I am really pleased with the outcome of my piece, I think that I have worked well in the time that I have been given, I have worked hard and managed to take some good images and edit them to create a professional looking magazine that is to a high standard.

Project Monitoring 5

This week I finished my front cover for my magazine, this was meant to be done in the final week of the production, but I had time in my  schedule to do it, at first I had the title of the magazine, the main image of 'Capture' and it's heading, I worked with the brightness of the image before I put it into the cover, because the faces looked a little dark and I needed them brighter. I was not sure as to what would go into the front cover, but then I decided to put in the other articles in. I also added an imaginary competition to fill up the cover, also because the generic music magazine has competitions, for the cover I have stuck to a three colour pallet of red, black and white. Once I had finished the front cover, I started work on the other DPS'
I thought I should get the 'Capture' spread out of the way because it is a triple page spread and it would take up the most time, the first thing I did was start on the first page of the three
The first page of the triple page spread shows the band in a relaxed stance, I chose this image because it looks the most natural and still retains a professional feel. Sticking with the style of the front cover, I created the title for the page, for the title, I looked through the interview that I did with the band and chose a quote from the vocalist about the band, because he used the word 'fruity' I thought I could incorporate this into the image, I went onto Google and got the texture of an orange and layered the text over the top, selected the letters, but copied the fruit layer below, leaving the text with the fruit's texture. From there I changed the Hue of the image to a red so it would stick to my three colour pallet and put it into the page. I entered a sub-heading so the readers have an idea what the article is about. I decided to use a quote for the title because it gives the reader an insight to the article before they've even turned the page.  I then moved on to the double page spread of the article.

I created the background for the article in PhotoShop and then layered it into inDesign, when making the double page I had trouble cutting out the background to put the band on a new one, I then decided to select a section of the background the band are already in, and drag it onto the  second page, this makes it look like the image has a large background, the line in which the image splits to the stretched image is visible but i can get rid of that with the use of the 'smudge' tool. Along with the triple page spread and the front cover, I started the second double page spread.

This is the double page for my second DPS 'Phil Strummer's Rockstar Rules', I followed the same style as the Capture layour with the image on one page and it's background dragged onto the other page, with this one, I made the model's shadow leak onto the other page, this makes the page look less stretched and obvious.

Project Monitoring 4

This week I finished all of my photo shoots, this meant I can now continue to make my pages in InDesign which I started this week. I measured all of my pages for the final piece using measurements from Kerrang! magazine, I edited the pictures of Joe for the DPS and filled in the other page with a background, I created the title for the article also on photo shop  I downloaded the font 'Crimes Times Six' for the title, this suits the article totally.

The photo shoot that I completed was for the 3PS Capture article, for the photo shoot  I had an issue with the models for my shoot, three of the members of 'Capture' didn't turn up leaving me with only one model, luckily I had the day to find a three contingency models, this was a success and I took some images. I decided to use a wide-angle lens for some of the photos, this gives the images a bigger feel to them, doing this meant I had to have the models really close together. I experimented with a number of poses for the band to do, the image below will be used as my front cover, I like this image because they are all in close proximity and their instruments are on show, I held the camera above the models and fairly close to the front model's face, you may not be able to tell because of the wide angle lens.

In the shoot, I took 161 photos of the models in total, this has given me a bigger choice of images when it comes to making the magazine, in total I will need to use around three of four images, but having that many gives me a better choice.

Project Monitoring 3

This week I did two of my three photo shoot's (Rock Star and Album), for my rock star shoot, Joe volunteered to dress as a generic 70's rock star, I took a large number of photographs in the shoot but I will not manage to use all of them because I dont have enough space, I also took a large number of photos for the second but I will not use them all, for homework I will edit the images that I will use to make sure they are ready for the magazine design next week

7th Jan
Monday - Schedule Creation: this week I will make sure that I create a realistic schedule to enable me to submit a completed project for the 15th February in accordance with the objectives outlined in my treatment. The schedule will be realistic, detailed and will contain 3 meaningful activities to complete as homework. Homework activities should take up four hours additional study time per week.

Wednesday - Schedule Creation: Today I will look at other commitments I have in my other A Levels including scheduled exams – this will enable me to produce a realistic schedule. In order to do this I will need to ask my other subject teachers about deadlines for homework/coursework during the next six weeks. Also I will book the Photo shoot for my Capture article.

Thursday -  Begin tweaking the album article, the article has been wrote, but it needs changing, some of the albums need changing and some of the grammar needs changing, changing it will improve the article.

Friday -  Project Monitoring & Font Research. I need to find out what fonts I will use in my magazine, doing this before the production stage of the work will benefit me because I will have the fonts chosen and downloaded.

Homework 1: Speak to Capture about the photo shoot and make sure they are up for doing it, then I will book the photo shoot with a member of the band present to ensure it does not clash with any of their plans/lessons etc. Also organize when they want to the interview, whether it will be at the same time as the shoot or not.

Homework 2:  tweak the album article I need to tweak the article about the albums because it is in need of adjustment, I have already written the article but it needs changing with the likes of certain paragraphs. Doing this for homework will free up the time I have in the lesson for important things to get the project finished.

Homework 3:finish any other subject required coursework, I need to allow time to other subjects as well as Media, I have exams in other subjects and coursework deadlines.

Exams/other subject deadlines:

2
14th Jan
Monday – Organise models for other two photoshoots. I need to organize who will feature in my other shoots, this will require contacting people that I know and seeing if they’re free during the time of the shoot so they can appear in the shoot.

2 continue and potentially finish tweaking the album article. If I finish the article about the albums, I can have it ready for the photos and the production.

3 meet with models I have to meet with the models that will be in my shoots, this is to give them a basic idea of what they will be doing and my requirements for them, this could be clothing requirements, or wether they will need to bring props.

4 Project Monitoring & Plan ‘rockstar’ article  I will begin the planning of the ‘rock star’ article this week because I aim to get all of the writing out of the way in the first two weeks, this article shouldn’t take too long to complete, I expect to finish that article in around two lessons.

Homework 1: REVISE FOR DIFFERENT SUBJECT EXAM. I have an English exam the following week, so it is crucial that I revise for it so I don’t fail, leaving my plans after college irrelevant.

Homework 2 & 3: Interview (and write up) Capture.. I aim to interview capture so I can get the article side of the piece done before the shoot, doing this will allow me to go into the production of the piece with both the photos and the article.

Exams/other subject deadlines:

3
21stJan
1 Begin writing the next article, this will be the ‘rockstar’ article, because I have already planned the article, beginning it shouldn’t not be a problem, I aim to finish the article within the next few hours so I will need to work hard and focus purely on the article.

2 Absent – I am absent this lesson due to a driving test, I will send work home via my USB to complete when I get home, this will more than likely be continuing with the new article that I started the lesson before.

3 finish the article.  I aim to finish the article today, doing this will allow me to continue with other things that I have to do in the other articles and have it ready for the images. I had my shoot an hour before the lesson so now I have the images for two of the articles.

4 Project Monitoring & finalizing the rockstar article, the finalizing of the article basically means to check its grammar and everything to make sure it is acceptable to put in a magazine, to do this I may give it to my assessor to read to see if it is okay to add to the article.

Homework 1: Do the work that would have been completed during Wednesday’s lesson, this will be continuing to write the rockstar article.

Homework2: begin plan for the capture article, because I have already wrote out the interview, all I need to do now it fit it into an article, this homework task will be to finish the plan and make sure it is ready to be finished the week after so the production can begin.

Homework 3:  Edit photo’s from Thursdays shoots, this involves the balance of the images and other factors, I need to get them ready for the magazine.

4
28th  Jan
1 begin writing the interview up in a correct style, my focus for this lesson was to write the interview into an article, I am not doing a question and answer layout which means I have to incorporate the interview into a story almost, this will take around two hours to complete because I aim to finish the article before the shoot on Wednesday

2 continue to write up the article, This is another hour dedicated to the Capture article, because this is the last article I have to write up, I can take my time to ensure it is good enough to use.
AFTER COLLEGE (WED) - PHOTOSHOOT – Capture Article.

3 maybe finish the capture article. The article will be finished in this hour, it will be checked for any errors and saved ready for the production stage of the project.

4 Project Monitoring & photo manipulation, I will be editing the photos from Wednesdays shoot, this is so they are ready for the DPS once the production stage begins.

Homework 1: Edit photos from capture photo shoot. This homework task if to finish any of the photos that haven’t been edited ready for the production.

Homework 2:  start making pages on inDesign, I will begin with the front page doing the page making at home will make it easier to do the work on Monday’s lesson because the page layout is already done.

Exams/other subject deadlines:

1 BEGIN PRODUCTION – FRONT PAGE. This is where the production of the magazine begins, I need to make sure I get as much done in the lesson as possible because I tend to get distracted on Photoshop and inDesign, this lesson will be for the front cover.

2 CONTINUE FRONT PAGE AND START CAPTURE DPS I will aim to finish the front cover in this lesson and begin the capture dps, I will add the photos in before the text so I can then layer the text over the top.

3 CAPTURE DPS I aim to continue with the capture article in this lesson this needs to be finished fairly quickly so I have time to go onto the other articles.

4 Project Monitoring & continuing articles. I aim to finish the article in this lesson if it is not already finished. I need to get the article and front cover done in this week so next week can be for the other articles.

Homework 1 ,2 and 3  finish capture dps and front cover. The homework is the last resort for these articles because I don’t have time to do them next week because that is the week that I am working purely on the other articles to get the production of them complete.

Project Monitoring

This week I began the production stage of my final project, the first thing I needed was my schedule this would tell me what I needed to week-by-week so I made sure that I was staying on target and getting all of the things done in time, I have strategically planned out the schedule so I get all of the writing side of the piece finished first, I chose to do the writing side of the project first because I know that if I set myself the task of working on inDesign and PhotoShop first, I will spend a lot of time making sure that I get it looking good, which will possibly leave me with no time to do the writing side. So instead, I am doing the writing side first to ensure I get it all done.

Another thing I have completed this week is the bookings for my photo shoots, I have decided to do two shoots because I have to take pictures for three different articles, one of which is a triple page spread. The triple page spread article has its own photo shoot, this is to ensure that I get enough pictures and the pictures that I take are of good quality, and are what I actually need. This shoot is on Wednesday, January 30th at 3.10, this is just after one of my media lessons, I chose to book the shoot then so I can get all of my things ready in the lesson so I can arrive at the shoot and get on with it. The other shoot I have booked is for the other two articles in my piece, the 'album' article and the new article 'how to become a rock star' I decided to do these two shoots in one slot because one of the models is in both shoots so they can be there instead of having to make it to two shoots. The new article I have decided to do (instead of the battle of the bands review) will have imagery taken for it, for that I will have to collect props, some of which I already own. I have decided to make the article joker and have the model dress as a cliche 'rock star' in the leather jackets, big hair and guitars.

In my schedule I have taken into account when my exams are, I only have one exam in January so I have made sure that the week of the exam is clear of any difficult tasks so I can focus purely on the exam. My schedule is realistic, I have not given myself too many tasks to do in a week that I probably couldn't finish and I have worked it around exams and other subjects coursework deadlines so I have a realistic schedule that i can follow throughout the whole production stage.

After finishing my schedule, I realised that I haven't gave myself any contingency time in case my articles aren't written in time, or my photo shoots are cancelled. I have the soft ware at home (Photoshop and InDesign) so if there are any visual problems that I cannot finish within the lesson I can sort them out at home, I can also sort out any article writing problems at home, the only problem that could arise is with regards to the shoots, If the models don' t turn up or the shoot get's cancelled, I have no other time to book them other than my free study time.
